Set it up for practice

Put the character speed at 18 to 20 words per minute and turn on Farnsworth spacing with an effective speed of 5 to 8. The letters then arrive at the speed you eventually want to copy at, with enough silence between them to write each one down. As you get faster, raise the effective speed and leave the character speed alone. That is the whole method, and it is why the two speeds are separate controls here.

Why the tone rises and falls

A tone that switches on instantly produces a click at both ends, because the waveform jumps rather than starts. Every element here rises and falls over a few milliseconds instead, and the ramp shortens automatically at high speeds so it can never swallow the element it is shaping. It is the difference between something you can listen to for an hour and something you cannot.

What pitch should I use?

Somewhere between 500 and 800 Hz. Operators pick a tone they can pick out of noise without it becoming tiring over an hour, and 600 Hz sits in the middle of the usual range. If you are working against background noise, moving the tone away from it helps more than turning the volume up.

Why does the download sound exactly like the playback?

Because it is the same envelope. The file is rendered offline from the identical description that drives the live audio, and not by a second routine that approximates it, so the speed, pitch and the shape of every element match what you heard.

What is Farnsworth spacing for?

Learning. Characters are sent at full speed so each one has a rhythm you recognise as a shape, while the gaps between them stretch to give you time to write it down. Practising at a uniformly slow speed teaches you to count dots, and that habit has to be unlearned later.

Why does it click on my machine?

It should not. Every element is shaped with a short rise and fall instead of being switched on and off, and the shaping is what stops the click: a square-edged tone pops at both ends. If you are hearing clicks, they are coming from somewhere else in the chain.
