How to learn Morse code
Not from the chart. Operators learn Morse by ear, two characters at a time, at full speed with the gaps stretched, and there is a reason every serious course teaches it that way: the alternative builds a habit that has to be broken later.
The trap: counting
E is one dot. I is two. S is three, H is four, the digit 5 is five. At a slow speed you can count them, and a beginner does, because it works. It stops working at about eight words a minute, the speed at which four dots arrive faster than anyone can count them. Everyone who learned by counting hits that wall, and the only way past it is to stop hearing dots and start hearing shapes, which means unlearning the thing that got you to eight.
So the method below never lets the counting habit form. It does that with one trick: the characters are always sent at a speed where counting is impossible, and only the silence between them is slow.
The Koch method
Ludwig Koch was a German psychologist who, in the 1930s, trained operators faster than anyone had before by inverting the usual order. Instead of the whole alphabet slowly, two characters fast. Instead of adding the next letter of the alphabet, adding whichever character is hardest to confuse with the ones already known. The result was that his students never counted, because they never had a slow enough signal to count.
- Start with K and M, at full speed. Two characters that share no structure, so telling them apart needs no counting.
- Add a third only when the first two are right nine times in ten. Then a fourth. The order is fixed by what is hardest to confuse with what you already know.
- Keep the characters fast and stretch the gaps. That is Farnsworth spacing, and it is the whole trick: you cannot count a character sent at 18 words a minute, so you learn its shape.
- Never look at the chart while listening. A chart teaches you to look things up; the ear has to learn on its own.
- Close the gaps last. When every character is a reflex, shorten the spacing until the gaps are standard, and you are copying at real speed.
The starting pair matters. K is -.- and M is --: one is long-short-long, the other is two longs. They share no structure at all, so the ear separates them on the first hearing. Compare the pair a chart would give you first, A and B, which are a mirror pair and a four-element code, both things a beginner should not meet until the ear is working.
Farnsworth spacing: fast letters, slow gaps
The translator below has a Farnsworth control. Turn it on, set the character speed to eighteen or twenty and the effective speed to six or eight, and listen to what happens: each letter arrives as a single fast shape, and then there is a long silence in which to write it down. That silence is the learning space. As the letters become reflexes, shorten it, and you arrive at standard timing without ever having heard a letter slowly.
Characters stay fast while the gaps stretch, so each letter arrives as one rhythm and there is nothing to count.
What to listen for
Every character has a shape, and the shape is easier to hear when it is said aloud. A is di-dah. N is dah-dit. Say them and the difference is obvious in a way it never is written down; that is the difference you are training the ear to hear. The alphabet page gives the spoken form for every character and, for each one, the characters it is a single mistake from. K, for instance, is one mistake from N, C, Y. Drilling a character against its neighbours teaches the distinction, and the distinction is the skill; drilling it alone teaches the character.
A schedule that works
Fifteen minutes a day beats two hours on Sunday, because the ear learns between sessions. Ten minutes of copying with the trainer, which adds characters in the Koch order as you earn them; five minutes of sending, which fixes the rhythms in the hand as well as the ear. Stop before it gets tiring. A tired ear counts.
Expect a plateau around the tenth character. Everyone gets one. It is the point where the easy distinctions are done and the mirror pairs and the dot-runs are what is left, and it passes with the same fifteen minutes a day it always did.

How long does it take to learn Morse code?
With the method on this page, ten to fifteen minutes a day, most people can copy the whole alphabet at a slow but usable speed in four to six weeks. Speed after that is practice, and it never stops improving. The people who take much longer are almost always the ones who learned the chart first and then had to unlearn counting.
Should I learn to send or to receive first?
Receive. Sending is easier and comes naturally once the rhythms are in your head; receiving is the skill that takes time, because it has to happen at the speed the other station chooses. Most learners find that once they can copy a character reliably, they can send it with almost no extra practice.
Why not use mnemonics?
Because a mnemonic is a translation, and translation is slow. If you hear di-dah and think "a-word-that-starts-with-a" and then think "A", you have done three things where an operator does one. Mnemonics are fine for the first week in a language that has good ones; they have to be abandoned before speed comes, and abandoning them is harder than never using them.
What speed should I aim for?
Twenty words a minute is conversational on the air and the speed most references are timed at. Thirteen was the old licensing standard and is comfortable. Five, the speed most beginners start at, is a trap: at five, every character is slow enough to count, and counting is the habit that caps you.
Is the Koch method the only way?
It is the one with the best evidence behind it, and the one every serious course now uses. The older way, learning the alphabet from a chart at a slow speed and then speeding up, works too, but it builds the counting reflex first and then fights it. Koch never lets the reflex form.
